Access Storage applauds the efforts of Beyond the BlueSeptember 25, 2023The risks that police officers face are obvious to most people. They go into places and situations that most of us would and should avoid. They do that to protect us and because they have answered a deeply felt call to serve the community.&nbsp;Doing that can often put them at physical risk. They deal with violence and with people who may lash out at them for just doing their job.&nbsp;There is also a psychological risk. In fact, the mental toll that the job puts on them is arguably more damaging and dangerous than any physical danger they may face in the line of duty. In the latter’s case, the danger is in the moment. It’s fleeting.&nbsp;With the former, it lingers. There are certain images that are difficult to get out of your mind.&nbsp;Seeing a serial victim of domestic abuse walk back into the same situation and knowing deep down that you’ll be back on the same call a month later. Telling a parent that their child has been killed in a traffic collision. Having to investigate the sudden death of an infant. These are all traumatic events that a police office will likely experience in their career. Probably more than once.&nbsp;The impact that has on their mental health is hard to understand. There isn’t an obvious bruise or cut that you can see and, importantly, see heal. Rather, the damage is internalized and if left untreated it can lead to terrible outcomes.&nbsp;Officers can turn to drugs and alcohol to cope and their relationships with friends, children and spouses can suffer. Sadly, in far too many cases, they can end up paying the ultimate price: Police die by suicide at a higher rate than the general population.&nbsp;Addressing that is the goal of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.canadabeyondtheblue.com/">Canada Beyond the Blue</a>, an organization dedicated to supporting and celebrating mental health advocates in the police services. On September 15, 2023, the organization held its second annual Champions of Change Gala, where it honoured those who are working to and working to create a safe workspace for those who need to ask for help.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was an inspiring night that helped shine a light into the darkness that can be mental health issues and hopefully provided a road map to creating a healthy environment moving forward.&nbsp;As we were last year, Access Storage was proud to be at the Gala as a sponsor. Events like the Champions of Change Gala help strengthen our community and allow us to give support to the people that normally are there to help us.&nbsp;We appreciate all police for the work that they do and thank Beyond the Blue for prioritizing the mental health of those officers.&nbsp;

Giving strength and support to police and their families

Ils se rendent dans des endroits et des situations que la plupart d'entre nous éviteraient et devraient éviter. Ils le font pour nous protéger et parce qu'ils ont répondu à un appel profond à servir la communauté.&nbsp;Ce faisant, ils s'exposent souvent à des risques physiques. Ils sont confrontés à la violence et à des personnes qui peuvent s'en prendre à eux parce qu'ils font simplement leur travail.&nbsp;Il existe également un risque psychologique. En fait, le fardeau mental que leur impose leur travail est sans doute plus dommageable et plus dangereux que tout danger physique auquel ils peuvent être confrontés dans l'exercice de leurs fonctions. Dans ce dernier cas, le danger se situe dans l'instant. Il est fugace.&nbsp;Dans le premier cas, il perdure. Certaines images sont difficiles à oublier.&nbsp;Voir une victime en série de violences domestiques retourner dans la même situation et savoir au fond de soi que l'on sera de nouveau appelé un mois plus tard. Annoncer à un parent que son enfant a été tué dans un accident de la route. Devoir enquêter sur la mort subite d'un nourrisson. Autant d'événements traumatisants qu'un fonctionnaire de police est susceptible de vivre au cours de sa carrière. Probablement plus d'une fois.&nbsp;L'impact sur leur santé mentale est difficile à comprendre. Il n'y a pas d'ecchymose ou de coupure évidente que l'on peut voir et, surtout, que l'on peut voir guérir. Il s'agit plutôt d'un dommage intériorisé qui, s'il n'est pas traité, peut avoir des conséquences terribles.&nbsp;Les agents peuvent se tourner vers les drogues et l'alcool pour faire face à la situation et leurs relations avec leurs amis, leurs enfants et leurs conjoints peuvent en souffrir. Malheureusement, dans de trop nombreux cas, ils finissent par payer le prix fort : Le taux de suicide des policiers est plus élevé que celui de la population en général.&nbsp;L'objectif de <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.canadabeyondtheblue.com/">Canada Beyond the Blue</a> est de remédier à cette situation. Cette organisation a pour but de soutenir et de célébrer les défenseurs de la santé mentale au sein des services de police. Le 15 septembre 2023, l'organisation a organisé son deuxième gala annuel des champions du changement, au cours duquel elle a rendu hommage à ceux qui s'efforcent de créer un espace de travail sûr pour ceux qui ont besoin de demander de l'aide.&nbsp; &nbsp;Ce fut une soirée inspirante qui a permis de mettre en lumière l'obscurité que peuvent représenter les problèmes de santé mentale et, espérons-le, de fournir une feuille de route pour la création d'un environnement sain à l'avenir.&nbsp;Comme l'année dernière, Access Storage était fier de participer au gala en tant que sponsor. Des événements tels que le gala des champions du changement contribuent à renforcer notre communauté et nous permettent d'apporter notre soutien aux personnes qui sont normalement là pour nous aider.Nous apprécions tous les policiers pour le travail qu'ils accomplissent et nous remercions Beyond the Blue d'avoir donné la priorité à la santé mentale de ces officiers.&nbsp;
